A soy-based diet has been proven to be an effective
means of lowering cholesterol by reducing the amount
of calories and saturated fat in one's diet. The
fat contained in soybeans is usually about 80% unsaturated
or linoleic acid which is an Omega-3 fatty acid
necessary for most every function of the human body.
Studies
have shown soy can help reduce the risk of heart
disease, increase the bone density in menopausal
women and reduce incidents of prostate cancer in
men.
In
October 1999, the FDA approved new labeling of soy-based
foods to call attention to the healthy benefits
for the heart. The agency reviewed research from
27 studies that showed soy protein's help in lowering
levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein
(LDL, or "bad" cholesterol).
The FDA stated:
"Diets
low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include
25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk
of heart disease."
To
be able to make this claim, products must contain
the following per serving:
-
6.25 grams of soy protein
-
Low fat (less than 3 grams)
-
Low saturated fat (less than 1 gram)
-
Low cholesterol (less than 20 milligrams)
-
Sodium value of less than 480 milligrams for individual
foods, less than 720 milligrams if considered
a main dish, and less than 960 milligrams if considered
a meal.

benefits to your daily diet:
Many
people have asked us how a beverage could have the
amounts of carbohydrates and fiber indicated on
the nutrition labels above. Being curious ourselves,
we asked our independent laboratory who generated
the analysis, and this is what they told us:
Dietary
Fiber is determined by the Total Dietary Fiber method.
The procedure is actually called "the enzymatic-gravimetric
method" approved and consistent with the AOAC
and the American Association of Cereal Chemists
(AACC). Total Dietary Fiber consists of 2 main components:
One which is soluble in water - soluble fiber -
and one not - insoluble fiber. This is the technique
that was used to find and report the fiber and protein
in both of our drinks after they were brewed.
The
Carbs are calculated differently. They, too, are
calculated using the industry standard which is
like a math equation. They take basically total
up the amount of protein, moisture, ash and fat
then subtract that from 100 and calculate that figure
into the size servings. The end result is that,
yes, there are carbs in our drink, but it is less
that 1% and therefore is reported as "0".
Because the moisture % is very high, as a liquid
(over 94) this helps to reduce down that number.
If Rocamojo were to be analyzed prior to brewing,
ALL the numbers would change - more protein and
fiber AND carbs because the product would be dry.
